I quit

After all these years, I quit RF2. There hasn't been any real activity
there for a while, and I'm convinced that the offers coming through
won't really increase my manoud. Whoever was moderating it is no longer
there to kick the spammers out.

For those who don't know, RF2 came about because of Mike Keneally's
irrational fear of goiters. Ironically, RF2 has been almost goiter free
from the beginning. Our most esteemed contributor is no longer with us.
I will miss Dr. Sick Bastard's tales from the Poison Control Center, but
there hasn't been one in years.

That leaves AMMK as the bastion of hotbed activity. As always, looking
forward to the next MTTY.

Well damn. I was just about to announce the closure of my MK tape trading site, but you've stolen my thunder. Thanks a lot.

Despite the fact that I never once frequented RF2 and my personal MK tape trading activity was minimal at best, this news is a double-barrel bummer. It's a reminder that there doesn't seem to be any real Keneally fan online "hangout," at least not that I'm aware of. Is there? A lot of Keneally fans appear to be relatively Facebook-phobic (which I get). Ten, fifteen years ago, this place was my daily hangout. Today, we're lucky to get more than one post a day.

Bummed,
Chris

I say this only because I can't always tell when someone is being tongue-in-cheek. But for the record, I shut down that site years ago. 2006, I believe. But here's what it looked like...

https://web.archive.org/web/20061205225450/http://www.mktrading.org/

Wow, that's a flashback and a half right there. I forgot all about the random lyric quote generator. And the mp3 archive! Geez, I wish I still had my t-shirt.

Talk about flashbacks - that site has a link to (among other things) the Forhead Gallery! For the record, in 2000, my favorite Keneally songs were apparently "Joe," "Potato," "I, Drum-Running, am Clapboard Bound," and "Own." This list would change significantly with the release of Wooden Smoke.

What's a tape?
The kids used to call them cassettes, which I have to assume is a very small version of Mama Cass.

What's a tape?
A tape is a digital recording device, also sometimes known as film. For
example, "One of our viewers caught this on tape using a cell phone
camera."

AMMK is forever. I never figured out RF2 - I always thought it was like radio, only better and more shiny. Or something like that. AMMK, however, was always very dear to my heart, for a whole bunch of reasons I may or may not share in the future (spoiler alert: I probably won't.)

It seems that the world is changing. Further, it seems that I'm now old enough to resent those changes. I'm looking forward to getting a cane to wave at the kids on my lawn. Or to getting a lawn.

But let's end on a happy note: Hey everybody, I'm getting married!

Now get off my lawn.

Yeah, that was OK. Better than other reactions I got. I actually had two different people tell me "weren't you guys already married?" One of them was my dad. Seriously. Maybe I don't communicate that kind of stuff to people around me as well as I should.

I'm still waiting for my invitation. You know my address. Or at least
you are smart enough to figure it out. On the other hand, I'm not smart
enough to figure out what present to get, so I'll just send you an 18
dollar bill. If I can't find one, I'll send two 9s or three 6s. As a
last resort I can send nine $2 bills.

I think the biggest difference is that RF2 had no prohibition against
mentioning goiters, while AMMK does. It's in the FAQ. Or at least it
would be if it were possible to do so without mentioning goiters in the
FAQ.
