Hey Mike, have any of your albums ever been released on vinyl? I'm thinking not.

I'd have been all over that a long time ago

Not, something we'd like to change though. We've had a couple of conversations with a guy and it seems real likely to happen. Wing Beat, Wooden Smoke and the next record are obvious candidates for single-disc vinyl, but I'd also love to see old analog recordings like hat, Dust Speck and Sluggo on double vinyl. Much more likely to happen now than it's ever been; we'll work it out, hopefully within the next couple of years.

Now that I'm back to collecting vinyl full-time, I'm curious to know if there's been any movement on this. Probably not a top priority, I imagine.

I can't help but be curious...what is gained by listening to a digital recording on vinyl? Apart from surface noise and turntable rumble, that is? I'm not naysaying, I genuinely want to understand the appeal.

Analog recordings I get, especially if the digital master sucks. I have a few vinyl rips that are superior to their CD counterparts (Iron Maiden, Piece of Mind, Dutch pressing...awesome) but I have those because the source is superior, and I have them ripped to digital. Converting a digital recording to analog and storing it on a relatively volatile medium...I'm missing something. Educate me!

Well, for me, a lot of it is a nostalgia/lifestyle factor. I like the ritual of putting on the record, poring over liner notes and cover art in the large size, turning over the record, etc. It's odd, but I like it. Also, almost all new releases (and reissues) come with a download code anyway, so I can rip it to my iPhone and listen in the car or on the train.

I can browse the stacks at Newbury Comics and walk away with something that doesn't look like computer software from Staples. Browsing old used record stores is a treat, too. And we still have a few of them in Boston.

As far as sound quality goes, a lot of the stuff I listen to is analog anyway. Not so much in terms of contemporary jazz and classical, but it's a trade-off. The 180 gram pressings tend to have greater audio fidelity (so I'm told), but I'm not enough of a sound quality geek to do blind testing or anything like that. Arguments can be made on both sides of the issue.

Okay, I get that completely. Similar to why I won't read comics (yes, I read comics, lots of them) on a computer or e-reader. I like pages. They may fade, wear, or get dirty, and I have to go through a physical process to obtain them, but I enjoy that process. I read grownup books on my Note 4 with no problem, because I'm simply ingesting text-based data. But I just don't enjoy digital comics. So I'm pretty sure I get where you're coming from.
