Whee! And keeps my string intact of seeing every record-setting shortest playoff OT goal since 1972.

- 1972, Pit Martin of Chicago against the Penguins, 12 seconds. Long story of how I saw that one -
the short version is, it was a school night, I tried to scam my mother into letting me stay up, she
yelled at me and made me go to bed at the end of regulation. I jumped into bed in a fury,
gloriously unaware of what adrenaline could do, and caught the headboard under my eye. A few
minutes later, I was on the couch with an ice pack on my face watching two records be set - the
fastest OT goal in playoff history (at that time), and the wickedest glare my mother ever gave me
(at that time).

- 1986, I think it was Brian Skrudland of Montreal against Calgary, 9 seconds. We'd gone to our
favorite BBQ place, saw the OT intermission was just about to end and thought great, we'll get to
see some OT hockey. We didn't even have everyone seated before it was over.

- 2011, Alex Burrows, 11 seconds.

Way cool - nothing like that to see here.

So, does your area pick up on the Canucks, or are they just that team from Vancouver? It's funny
how Buffalo and Detroit seem to draw a lot of fans from Canada, but I'm hard-pressed to think of a
situation where the opposite occurs.

Like most, well all, cities that have NBA but no NHL teams (yes, the
Sonics moved but they are missed, even by Trailblazers fans such as
myself,I mean I *hated* the Sonics but they had to *be* there...)
hockey is not really top-of-mind in the U.S. side of the Pacific
Northwest. Many are paying attention to *this* finals tho...

The other side of that coin, when the Blue Jays come to play the
Mariners, I was at one of ***@e games back in the Griffey era and
quite frankly so many Canadians made their way down from Greater
Vancouver that it almost felt like I was rooting for the road team...

No - I'm thinking much shorter than that! ;-)

The big question up there is the goaltending - Luongo vs. Schneider. I think Luongo's leash is
much, much shorter this year. And Daniel being out won't help, although I saw he skated today.

The biggest thing is that teams seem to have a lot of trouble in the playoffs the season following a
long run. Still, if either Luongo or Schneider get hot, the Canucks are in good shape to make
another hard run at it.

The Penguins are healthy at the right time. The question is, assuming they get past Philly, how
healthy they'll be then. Then again, if you believe the NY media, it doesn't matter - it's just a
matter of time until the NHL cancels the playoffs and awards the Cup to the Penguins because they're
apparently the current favorite of the cabal behind the conspiracy. Or, as Bill Hicks put it,
"Coup, coup, coup..."

I agree that Luongo's leash is an inch long, but maybe that's not a bad thing. Luongo's biggest problem is under concentration and over confidence. And Schneider had looked pretty good at times. The Canucks looked completely out of the President's Trophy picture until they went on a major tear at the end of the season, hot at the right time. I think by the time they put away the Kings (I say in 6 games) DS will be back at least at 95%

I hope so - concussions are frigging nasty.

The Pens blew it big time tonight. A 3-0 lead and a team on the ropes - the Pens came out from the
start of the game, declared their intentions, set the tone and tempo, and dominated the Flyers in
the first. Then they said, "There, take that" and sat back and watched the Flyers come back to win
4-3 in OT. That's bad enough - but it's three times in four games that the same thing has happened.
If they haven't learned their lesson by now, it's going to be a very short series. I'm sticking
w/my prediction of Pens in 6, but I'm not feeling overly confident about it.

And if you saw it, I'm not as down on the Shea Weber play at the end of the Detroit-Nashville game
as the commentators were. Zetterberg had his glove up protecting his head, and he was doing a huge
sell job on how hard Weber slammed his head into the turnbuckl...I mean glass. A bit of spine the
Pens haven't shown yet.

Well, 'Nucks were also done in with a late goal. Difference is that the Kings outplayed them for nearly the entire game. out shot, out hustled the 'Nucks, and Luongo is the only reason they were in the game at all. Fuckity.

As the resident Flyers fan lurker, I have to ask how that assumption
worked out? <insert evil laugh here>

I actually predicted Penguins in 5, because I thought the Flyers had
too many rookies and Bryzgalov had the chipped bone in his foot. I
was just hoping it'd be good experience for the rookies.

I didn't foresee Flurey completely falling apart like he did in games
1, 2 and 3, and to some degree in game 6. 30 goals in six games?
That's insane. Of course, that worked both ways - both Flyers'
goalies managed to give up 5 goals IN THE SAME GAME. This was the
screwiest playoff series I've ever seen.

The other thing I was really surprised by was how the Penguins were
by far the more physical...and dirtier...team. I'm hoping half the
Flyers don't have concussions going into round two.

Now I'm just hoping we don't get the Rangers.

Fleury is great when he's good, but awful when he's bad, and he's rarely
in between. I certainly didn't expect an implosion of epic proportions.

I thought the Devils would beat the Flyers. I didn't think it would be
five games. I thought seven and a much tougher struggle. The Flyers
kind of lost their cool, especially towards the end. They did a lot of
the same stuff they accused the Pens of doing, except for getting as far
away from their game as the Pens did.

The Kings have been a huge surprise to me. They didn't play all that
well the last week of the season and squandered a golden opportunity to
win their division. I thought they'd go out against the Canucks, but
Quick played really well. I was impressed with the Blues in the first
round, but the Kings apparently weren't - they handled the Blues pretty
easily. And now, with the Coyotes, they have a chance to knock off the
top 3 seeds in the same playoff year. I do think the Coyotes will give
them a tougher fight - Smith is playing incredibly well right now.

With a couple off nights, though, I've caught up on a lot of my DVRed stuff!

Ugh. Just ugh.

True confession - I did not watch as much of the Canucks game because I was just kind of disgusted
with hockey in general after that game. And I will likely miss at least half of their game Sunday
(I assume they play Sunday) because I think I'm going to see Mastodon, Opeth and Ghost. Somehow,
loud grinding guitars and drums and lots of screaming seems like it will likely be more soothing
than another hockey game. Keeping my fingers crossed, and at least I don't have to listen to the
Penguins TV announcers tom'w - they are to hockey announcing announcing what a red hot poker in the
eye is to tasty deserts. Freaking HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCER on the payroll, and they put him on radio
and put these two clowns on TV. And I can't get the delay matched up to listen to the radio while I
watch with the sound down.

LOL! I actually listened to that game and the Pens radio crew online, they call a good hockey game. BTW, game 3 is on NBC, starting now and called by Mike Emerick for what that's worth. My ATF Hockey play-By-Play is Gary Thorne.

Yes, but it got better in 4 and 5. Tom'w's game 6 will be key. I,
unfortunately, will be refereeing soccer during the bulk of the game.
12:00 was about the worst starting time for me!

I'm very partial to Mike Lange as an announcer, but I think my favorite
team was Mike Emerick and Bill Clement back when they did Flyers games.
They also did some games for national networks, notably SportsChannel
America - they did some regional games, and if the national feed went to
another game, it was like sitting in your living room with them - they'd
make jokes, talk about players doing dumb things, all kind of neat
stuff. We were watching a Flyers-Caps game around the holidays, and
Clement was talking about taking his daughter to see New Kids On The
Block. Doc asked him if it was good, and Clement said, "Oh god, no - it
sucked!" No diplomacy at all.

Speaking of diplomacy, on one of those SCA playoff games, Clement
started doing play by play, substituting US and Canadian politicians'
names for the players. Emerick said, "Great - what's next, 'Sirhan
Sirhan with the shot'?" I would have killed to have a tape running for
that.

The team absolutely SUCKS but the venue (http://www.comcastarenaeverett.com/) is a very very nice approx. 5000 seat arena and there isn't a bad seat in the house. And most importantly, the WHL isn't in lockout. I really can't figure out who's the villains in this although I'm leaning to the NHL owners. Fuck 'em all, really. I was really hoping this wasn't going to end up like '04-'05 but it looks like it's heading that way.

I suspect you're right. I didn't have a ton of hope going into this,
and it's been amply rewarded. Every time they seem to make an inch of
progress, the owners jump back a foot. Both sides have things I think
they've been wrong on, but I tend to fall on the side that the owners
have been worse. I saw a quote today where Bettman said the owners have
done nothing but give, but I still can't figure out what universe that's
true in.

What has surprised me is how little I've missed the NHL. I watch a bit
of college, junior and minor league hockey here and there, and we'll
probably make an extra road trip or two, but I've found plenty of stuff
to do with the tine that I'm not spending watching the NHL.

I half suspect they'll come to a last-second agreement to avoid a second
lost season, but even I don't think that's more than a 50-50 shot, if
that good.
