Once the wunderkind guitarist, keyboarder and sometimes vocalizer of
the Frank Zappa band and more recently the special ingrediant in the
Joe Satriani band and Dethklok, Mike Keneally recently sat down with
our intrepid FMT interviewer Simon Ross to talk about projects present
and future.

SR: Ice Cream or Sherbet?

MK: Flaming sorbet.

SR: Tell me something that no one knows about your project with [XTC
band leader] Andy Partridge.

MK: A couple of songs we are not putting on the Wing Beat Fantastic
album were given to Donovan. Jimmy Page was producing Donovan's next
album in the room next to ours and they became intrigued by what we
were creating. Andy and I sing and play on two tracks, one of which
features Jeff Beck. We all went out for tea afterwards.

SR: What's next?

MK: After Wing Beat Fantastic, I'm taking advantage of some
opportunites that developed from meeting with Jeff Beck Jand Jimmy
Page. Jeff was looking for some new material for his next album. We're
going into the studio next week to see what happens. Jimmy also has
been working on an album that he descibes as 'What Led Zeppelin Might
Have Been'. We have demos of tracks with Terry Reid on vocals, David
Pegg on bass and mandolin, Aynsley Dunbar on drums and yours truly on
keys, guitar and sorbet.

I've got a couple of projects lined up for next year that couldn't be
further apart. One is with Paul McCartney, who heard some of the
Donovan and Winged Beat Fantastic albums and said 'I want to return to
1967'. We've been trading song ideas back and forth over email.

The other is literally King Crimson meets Mahavishnu Orchestra. Many,
many years ago Robert Fripp interviewed John McLaughlin for a music
magazine [Musician, July 1982] where they shared a mutual admiration.
They finally decided 'it's now or never'. Tony Levin is lined up for
bass, Narada Michael Walden on drums, Jamie Muir on percussion and
maybe L. Shankar-excuse me, Shenker-on violin. We may get Allan
Holdsworth on at least one piece - it depends on scheduling.

That band will not be touring, so I'll probably be on the road with
Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck later this year [MK looks as though he said
something he shouldn't have] and with Paul McCartney in 2013. Did I
mention that Adrian Belew and Ringo Starr are also going to be in the
band? And the band name is going to be instantly recognizable-it's
Sarjen-wait, I've already said too much. I've got to go now.

SR: Thank you for your time.
MK: Lost time is never found again.

Bill, you always find the most wonderful bits of info. Or disinfo.
Whatever, just keep it coming.

You had me until you brought Narada Michael Walden into it. Totally implausible.

Although NMW was in Jeff Beck's band last year, he is no longer-so he's
available.

Playing with Jeff indicates 1) he still has his chops and 2) he still
enjoys playing instrumental rock. Given the royalties he should be
receiving, he didn't have to play with Jeff for the money.

He played drums for both John McLaughlin (Mahavishnu O. no. 2) and 3
tunes on Robert Fripp's Exposure album. AFAIK, he left their employ on
good terms. Also, He and Ralphe Armstrong played with John at a Hendrix
tribute show back in 1995.
