K.T.C. Copy Protection: What the hell?

I recently got a "Cat Sitter" DVD for our cats. You know, video of
birds, mice, fish, etc. with appropriate sounds. At the beginning, it
has this warning, with a voiceover reading the text. Obviously, it was
on the original video master, and they just put it on the DVD. Anybody
ever heard of such a thing?

WARNING: IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ.
The program portion of this tape has been coated with a new substance
called K.T.C. to prevent illegal copying. K.T.C. only reacts when
subjected to the magnetic head fluctuation caused by the record mode. If
you have already started to record this tape, we are required by law to
inform you that the K.T.C. process may damage your VCR. K.T.C. will not
affect your VCR in the play mode. The tape coated with K.T.C. does not
begin for another 15 seconds. STOP RECORDING NOW.

Thank you for purchasing this video.
Enjoy the show!

If this were true, then K.T.C. would only react if you tried to record
over the original tape. It would do nothing to prevent you from
making a copy of the tape. Sounds like complete B.S. to me (B. S.
stands for Boilthatdust Speck, of course).

Yes.

But another thing you can do is ask them what law. Laws are a matter of
public record, and if they are required by law to tell you, you should be
able to look it up.

Check out the Cecil Adams thread:

Another thing you can do is call them up. "Hello. I put your tape in my GO
Video VCR and pressed the middle button by mistake instead of the play
button, and then I left the room so my cats could watch the tape. When I
came back, my VCR was broken. Then I rewound your tape and saw your
warning, but it was too late. I'd like you to pay for my VCR."

I'll be damned! Is there anything Cecil and/or his readers haven't
discussed?

I'll bet they haven't discussed the spark plug fluid. But *we* know...
